Your enjoyment of this weekend's Saturday Night Live depended almost entirely on whether or not you enjoyed Kristen Wiig's recurring characters, characters who left us only one season ago. Many -- myself not particularly included, but I'll get to that in one sec, do not rush me -- suffered from Wiig fatigue by the time she left, and I don't think the short break between her work as a cast member and her work as a host was enough to draw any sort of nostalgia-induced happiness for characters that became, by this group of viewers, ultimately disliked. For those in the group that found Wiig's characters one-note and more obnoxious than funny, this episode was probably omfggggggggggggggggg-the-worst. But for those who, although they can see where the others are coming from, never particularly felt sick of most of Wiig's characters -- barring "The Californians," which continues to only seem like a cruel, unending prank on the viewers -- this episode was very good! I AM IN THAT GROUP! One of the few who will proudly say that she is a fan of "Gilly," and who still quotes "Gilly" in her day-to-day, I found this episode to be generally quite enjoyable. The cold open was confusingly bad and statement-less, and, like I already mentioned, "The Californians" was included and went on forever, but there were a bunch of good parts! Let's take another look!
The "1-800-Flowers" Mother's Day commercial premise was a simple one, but I thought it was executed well and took up only as much time as it could reasonably fill. It sounds like I'm reaching to give it a compliment, but I truly did like it! LOL!
"New Disney Show" was odd because that ghost lady hasn't gotten a lot of BUZZ lately, but the Disney parody element was very well done and I kind of do always have a spot in my heart for a goof on that ghost lady, so WHATEVER! I LIKED IT!
Although "Lawrence Welk" is totally the kind of recurring Wiig sketch that people complain about -- one joke, done a million similar ways -- I will always love it. When she says crude things?! Give me a break. Love it, laugh it, don't care.
Double Date was great.
Target Lady is not someone that I am always on board with, but I was on board with her this time. It's nice that we don't have to see her a lot anymore, but it felt good 2 check in! YOU JUST CANNOT STOP MY LIKE TRAIN FOR THIS EPISODE, IT IS OFF THE RAILS AND BARRELING TOWARDS UR HEART!
Similarly, "Garth And Kat" is not a Weekend Update premise that I wished could go back to being included every few episodes, (there isn't a Weekend Update premise that I WOULD want to be included too frequently), but I do enjoy the premise a lot and luved this bit.
Acupuncture was great. Very silly. Probably a nice break for those of you unhappy with all of the recurring Wiig characters. A+
Finally, Vampire Weekend performed and were also great. I JUST LIKE THIS EP A BUNCH, YOU CANNOT STOP ME!
