The KPop Demon Hunters phenomenon just keeps getting bigger. HUNTR/X, the girl group at the center of the smash Netflix animated musical, joined a short list of fictional acts with a #1 hit when "Golden," one of many bangers on the movie's soundtrack, reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 two weeks ago. After dropping to #2 last week, the song is back at #1 for a second time today, and more achievements are piling up.
For one thing, "Golden" is joined by three other KPop Demon Hunters tracks in the Top 10. The demonic boy band Saja Boys have "Your Idol" at #4 and "Soda Pop" at #5, while the HUNTR/X track "How It's Done" is up to #10. Per Billboard, this is the first time one soundtrack has placed four songs simultaneously in the Top 10. The last soundtrack to spin off four Top 10 hits was Waiting To Exhale, which yielded five such chart peaks in 1995 and 1996 — but not four in the same week. The last time a soundtrack landed three songs in the Top 5 concurrently was Saturday Night Fever in 1978.
On top of the pop chart domination, the movie is the toast of the box office. After weeks of streaming success, Netflix gave KPop Demon Hunters a theatrical release last weekend, and the film earned $16-18 million, good for #1 on the week. It's the first time a Netflix movie has led the box office, Billboard reports — which makes sense because Netflix famously does not usually allow its movies to be released in theaters. With 236 million views so far, it also becomes the most popular Netflix movie of all time.
Andy Samberg is a fan, and he got Joanna Newsom hooked on "Golden" too: "I watched it on the Netflix, solo on my iPad. My wife was very confused what I was doing, but then I played her that 'Golden' and it all made sense," he told Good Morning America today.
Back to the Hot 100: Alex Warren's "Ordinary" is at #2, followed by Morgan Wallen and Tate McRae's "What I Want" at #3. Ravyn Lenae's "Love Me Not" is at #6, Teddy Swims' deathless "Lose Control" is at #7, Justin Bieber's "Daisies" finishes at #8, and Wallen's "Just In Case" falls to #9.
