The Softies – “Turn It Up” (Lisa Prank Cover)

Alicia J Rose

It's always cool when a legendary act covers a much younger peer, and it's even cooler when it happens on an underground level. That's what's going on here. Last year, the Softies, a '90s cult-favorite twee duo, got back together and released The Bed I Made, their first album in 24 years. Today, they salute their labelmate and stylistic peer Lisa Prank.

The Softies and Lisa Prank both record for the great indie-pop institution Father/Daugher Records, which is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary with the F/D Fifteen, a series where 15 bands with records on Father/Daughter will cover 15 other artists songs that came out on Father/Daughter. Thus far, that series has included things like mui zyu covering Shamir and Pure Bathing Culture covering (hey, look at that) the Softies. Lisa Prank has also taken part, releasing her version of Happy Diving's "Sad Planet."

For their contribution, the Softies have taken on Lisa Prank, otherwise known as Seattle musician Robin Edwards. Her song "Turn It Up" originally came out on her extremely fun 2016 album Adult Teen. It's a lovely, mellow jangle that makes perfect sense as a Softies song, and now it is a Softies song.

In a press release, Lisa Prank says, "I cried when I heard this cover! The Softies are one of my favorite bands and some of my dearest friends, so it’s hard to fully explain how much it means to me that they covered my song so incredibly beautifully. I wish I could whisper this information into the ears of a younger version of myself and blow her mind." Below, check out the Softies' version of "Turn It Up" and the Lisa Prank original.
