It's PONY, baby! The giddy, consistently excellent Toronto fuzz-pop duo will release their new album Clearly Cursed in a little more than a month, and it's shaping up to be something special. We've already heard a grip of early tracks: "Freezer," "Every Little Crumb," "Superglue," "Middle Of Summer." Today, they break us off with another one.
Like so many other PONY songs, the new single "Swallowing Stars" is a riffy and melodic gem that would've lit up the alt-rock airwaves if it had come out in 1994. I just really like this band. Every song is a perfect little hook-engine, and they all have personality to burn. Here's what Sam Bielanski says about their latest:
"Swallowing Stars" is about being caught in the crosshairs of a relentless people pleaser. Drinking in every beautiful word they say, as if it wasn’t just a reflection of your own thoughts and ideas, and the ultimate letdown when you finally see behind the curtain. It's like the scene in The Wizard Of Oz when the giant animatronic wizard’s head stops working and a little insecure man walks out from behind it.
