London-based musician Wesley Joseph emerged in 2021 with ULTRAMARINE — a collage of avant-pop, melancholic funk, and seamless grooves. Today, he's back with a new single "Peace Of Mind" featuring Danny Brown. The single is the follow-up to his sole release from last year "If Time Could Talk." It announces his new album Forever Ends Someday, out April 10 via Secretly Canadian.
The forthcoming album was made between London, Walsall, Los Angeles and a remote mountainside studio in Switzerland. It's got a stellar list of collaborators including Nicolas Jaar, Romil Hemnani (formerly of Brockhampton), Harvey Dweller, Tev’n, A.K. Paul, and Al Shux. Childhood friend and renowned singer Jorja Smith is also featured on a track.
"Peace Of Mind" is immediately captivating, with a sharp delivery and gasps for air. "Push me, I'm already close to the edge/ Smile on my face with my toes on the ledge," Joseph opens. He then swiftly shifts into the lethargic, bass-heavy beat.
In the accompanying video, which is also directed by Joseph, a camera pans around him as people beat the shit out of each other, spray champaign, throw drinks at each other, and have their first dance. It's a perfect visual for the song that Joseph says is about "solace and unrest. It’s a self-prescribed pick me up and was written from an empowered but unsettled place, - sometimes you feel the fire in your stomach the most when things aren’t sweet."
On working with Brown, he added:
It was a dream having Danny Brown work on the song - growing up he was always one of my hero artists, someone who's an outsider and knows no rules when it comes to pushing sound forward and being fearless with it. Hearing his voice on the song was such a crazy thing and the energy he came with was even better than I could ever have imagined.
