Flying Lotus Announces New EP Big Mama

Flying Lotus is now an auteur in every sense of the word. 2025 saw the release of Ash, the sci-fi movie that FlyLo directed. (Naturally, he also scored his own movie.) It takes a whole lot of work to put a movie together. When he finished with Ash, FlyLo immediately went to work on a new piece of music, and he's announcing it today. Next month, Flying Lotus will release a new seven-track EP called Big Mama. It follows Spirit Box, the club-indebted surprise EP that FlyLo released in 2024, and it'll serve as his first proper release on Brainfeeder, the label that he founded in 2008.

Flying Lotus has yet to release any singles from Big Mama, so all we really have right now is a teaser trailer for an accompanying short film, some excellently bugged-out cover art from Christopher Ian Macfarlane, and a truly intriguing description of the record. According to a press release, FlyLo used no loops on Big Mama. Instead, he spent two months on the EP, working with nothing but a laptop and a controller and putting together just 10 to 15 seconds of new music per day before stitching it all together.

In the press release, Flying Lotus describes Big Mama as an "experimental, maximalist, hyperfast, electronic burst of energy." Allow him to continue:

I wanted it to feel like being shot out of a cannon, just explosive, unpredictable energy. Like a fuckin’ computer gone awry. Like a machine that had just lost its mind...

I wanted it to be free and feel alive. I think that was a big intention of mine with this record, just to think about it more like sound design and make something that felt unpredictable and maximal. As we get into a place where tracks are becoming more "perfect" and things are becoming more sterile, I want to try to keep it interesting and try to keep bringing in things that are uniquely human to electronic music, which is, you know, becoming harder I guess.

That sounds intriguing! I am intrigued! Below, check out the hyperactive stop-motion teaser and the tracklist.
