Geese’s Tiny Desk Concert Is Really Good

An Australian TikToker recently ran into Geese frontman Cameron Winter at an airport, and they had a little impromptu interview. When asked what was next for Geese, Winter said, "We go deeper into the sort of belly of whatever, you know, indie complex is shilling us right now." When he got the obvious follow-up question about the "indie complex," Winter said, "Oh, it's so complex, so complex. Even I don't know how it works, why we've been chosen as the sort of main product." So: Was he talking about... us? Stereogum?

Well, we do really love Geese. Getting Killed was our favorite album of last year. And while we at Stereogum are under no illusions that we're the reigning monarchs of the indie complex, I guess we're part of it. Since Geese made the big critical-favorite leap, things have been happening with them. They just played Saturday Night Live, so maybe people like us booked them for that. Maybe people like us booked them for a Tiny Desk Concert, too. If so, good job, people like us. Geese's Tiny Desk Concert is up now, and it's good shit.

In their Tiny Desk, Geese burrow deep into three of the quieter tracks on Getting Killed: "Husbands," "Cobra," and "Half Real." As with every televised live performance, they mess around with their songs' arrangements without ever going full jam band (or, if I may, full Goose). In a time when bands are generally trying to sound like their records, it's always inspiring to see them coloring outside the lines a little bit. I also like the part where Cameron Winter lightly roasts the crowd: "Is this a ticketed thing? How did you guys get into this? I thought it was just NPR staffers here, and friends. NPR staffers don't have this many friends!" Watch it below.

I'm guessing that the indie complex representatives responsible for this booking are Tiny Desk Concerts producers Dora Levite and Bobby Carter, so shout out to them. Shout out also to Tiny Desk series editor Lars Gotrich, a nice guy and a great music writer who has a most excellent name. Lars Got Rich. Fucking sick. If that was my name, you couldn't tell me shit.
