Next month, the starry-eyed space-funk bass astronaut Thundercat will return with Distracted, his first album in six years. We've already posted the Lil Yachty collab "I Did This To Myself," and the LP also has appearances from A$AP Rocky, Tame Impala, WILLOW, and Channel Tres. Today, we get to hear the album track that features Thundercat's late friend Mac Miller.
Mac Miller and Thundercat recorded a great many songs together during the last years of Miller's life, and Thundercat was in Miller's band during his great Tiny Desk Concert just before Miller's 2018 passing. In a press release, Thundercat says, "I'm grateful to have spent my time on this planet with Mac. What an artist, what a spirit, what a joy to have experienced."
Mac Miller and Thundercat got started on the light, playful dating-life lament "She Knows Too Much" years ago, and it was unfinished when Miller died. Years later, Thundercat went back and finished the track with big-deal pop producer Greg Kurstin. The Léa Esmaili-directed cartoon video shows Thundercat and Mac Miller on a journey through a psychedelic red light district. It moves through a ton of different animation styles, and I caught a few homages, like The Big Lebowski and the Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde cover art, in there. Check it out below.
Distracted is out 4/3 on Brainfeeder.
