In the 2010s, Grace Bennett and Jade Alcantara were living in separate cities, bonding online over their stan-level fandom for One Direction (Bennett) and the 1975 (Alcantra). That turned into a real-life friendship that involved meeting up at shows multiple times per year and, in 2019, buying guitars to start their own band despite not knowing how to play yet.
Fast forward to 2026, when the duo's band Sub*T has announced debut album How My Own Voice Sounds. It'll be out on May Day. The band explains the title like so:
The album title itself is more of a statement, but it poses a question we’ve been asking ourselves since we first started our band. How does my own voice sound? Not in a literal way. We know that much. But how do I want to use it, what do I want to say, how do I want to express all the details of my life so that I can recognize the sound of my own voice and understand myself? This album represents all the ways you can answer that to ultimately hear yourself as you really are.
Lead single "Overcomplicate," out today, is grunge-pop that pulls more from Sub*T's current inspirations like Juliana Hatfield and Liz Phair. Watch Jackie Young's video for the track below.
