Britney Spears has been arrested for suspicion of DUI, TMZ reports. The incident happened around 9:30 Wednesday night in Westlake Village in Ventura County when the singer was apprehended by California Highway Patrol.
Spears was taken to a hospital to determine blood alcohol content and later booked around 3 a.m. Thursday morning. Ventura County Sheriff's inmate records show she was released around 6 a.m., and she's scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
Dispatch audio obtained by Page Six reveals she was swerving from lane to lane in her BMW before being pulled over. Police are also testing an unknown substance found in her car according to TMZ.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for 44-year-old Spears says in a statement. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."
Last fall Spears issued some lengthy social media statements in response to allegations made about her in her ex-husband Kevin Federline's new memoir You Thought You Knew. Federline accused Spears of erratic and dangerous behavior, including cocaine use, around their two sons. "I know his book will sell loads more than mine," the pop star wrote. "If you really love someone then you don’t help them by humiliating them."
Spears published her own memoir The Woman In Me in 2023, which did not paint her ex boyfriend Justin Timberlake in the most flattering light. A few months after that book's publication came Timberlake's own infamous DWI arrest in the Hamptons in June 2024; earlier this week, he sued to stop the release of the bodycam footage of his arrest, arguing that releasing it publicly would constitute an invasion of his privacy.
Though she's come under fire for unsafe driving habits before, this appears to be Britney Spears’ first arrest. Meanwhile her once very active Instagram account has now been taken down.
