Berlin-based Queens native duendita released her latest project last year with the sprawling a strong desire to survive. Now, she's announcing her new album, relatably titled existential thottie. The hushed, sparkly tune "super sad!" is out now.
"At first, I was nervous to share this project. The songs are so personal, like a diary," duendita says, expounding:
Then I realized this is the first project I produced completely "head 2 toe," so no wonder… these songs started with me, sometimes just me and my Digitakt, alone, late nights and early mornings, pure expression. Maybe this project is for me, more than for anyone else.
I worked on the demos as much as I could, then brought in my collaborators and bandmates. I love letting our live experiences inform our recorded music—that’s how we ended up with harp and live drums, additional vocals, keys, and bass. For a long time, "beach" was my favorite song… but now "roasting that ass" stole my heart. When we play it live, ugh, lawddddd, I love life.
The whole project is about being jiggly, ridiculous, and honest — songs about breakups, crying in the club, emotional pain that never leaves, really hot and safe sex, birth control, fights in my hetero ass situationship, my time navigating the state mental health system… and ending with a promise that I will give healing my all.
The intimate nature of the songs is evident on "super sad!," which feels like a candid snapshot of a feeling, sharpened with humor: "I'm in the club/ Super sad/ Super sad/ So I throw it back." Amazing. Listen below.
