Spaceport – “Sugar Moon”

Last month we learned of Cut The Lake, the new album from the Minnesota indie-pop band Spaceport, and heard its grandly sweeping lead single "Switch." They've since graced us with two more tracks. "Lungs" leans into the country side of Spaceport's sound, with weeping pedal steel and regal trumpet accompanying Arianna Wegley's whispery vocals. Meanwhile, the new "Sugar Moon" starts off humbly and casually but eventually builds to a fiery climax.

On their Substack, the band wrote a bit about this one:

If you’re familiar with Ari’s instrumental discography, you may recognize Sugar Moon’s main melody from her song “Bicycle.” Ari’s pandemic-era ambient phase is a keystone in the edifice of Spaceport, check it out ^_^

We collaborated a lot more on lyrics for Cut the Lake, and the words for this song mostly came from Todd’s brain. They popped out pretty quick but he was stuck on the chorus… We spent an afternoon walking around the bird sanctuary and Lake Harriet spitballing random words. In another universe, “cut the lake, make a room” is “ceviche afternoon.”

Sugar Moon was the last track we recorded at Pachyderm. We had the time of our lives recording these songs, but it was also a lot of pressure trying to get so much done in just three days. I had a breakdown bubbling up to the surface before stepping into the studio for the last time, and Todd brought the band outside for a good pep talk + huddle under the moon. In our celebration afterwards, we decided to use a lyric from this song as our album title. Sugar Moon song means a lot to us and we hope it will mean something to you too. ???

Hear "Sugar Moon" and "Lungs" below.

Cut The Lake is out 4/3 via Aura Vortex. Pre-order it here.
