Widemouth are a Chicago band who formed in 2023 after two of its founding members, vocalists/guitarists Mak Carnahan and Jamie Eder, began performing Paul Simon and Big Thief covers together in the basement of a Northwestern University dorm. Now with drummer Lily Mitchell and bassist Pat Pilch in the mix, they'll release their debut album No Gasoline this May. Its title track is out today.
No Gasoline was recorded over five days, entirely live, in a makeshift studio in a rural Indiana barn. Its 13 songs hold friendship and relationships at its thematic center, though the members of Widemouth insist the record is a testament to their own friendship in itself: "We write these songs together, so all of the pain we’re expressing is shared," they explain in a press release.
"No Gasoline" is a meandering, alt-country ballad that reminds me of Phoebe Bridgers and Waxahatchee. Eder explains of its backstory: "One time I ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection in Chicago. I rolled over to the side of the road and jogged to a gas station. It was freezing. A good example of the kind of ‘ignore my problems until they just become fundamentally unignorable’ strategy I was employing for a long time."
