Frog – “Dark Out”

Jarod A. Walker

Last month, New York duo Frog announced a new album Frog For Sale, following two 2025 LPs, The Count and the Album Of The Week champion 1000 Variations On The Same Song. They've already released some stellar singles, including “Je Ne Sais Pas," which we named one of that week's Best Songs. Today, Bateman's gifted us another one called "Dark Out."

I am not going to pretend that I understand what's going on in "Dark Out," but it's another masterfully crafted work from the duo. Daniel Bateman's delivery is cozy but also a little eerie or sad when he sings: "I need for you to feel me like a knife/ I thought you knew the real me/ And its right upstairs/ Just choose carefully, dear." It's pretty marvelous when his voice reaches those registers. He's in good company too: a warm, weathered piano, angelic strings that stretch their limbs in the background, a jovial tambourine stomp.

Watch the video for "Dark Out" below, which is a compilation of childhood home video footage of the Bateman brothers. It's lovely.

Frog For Sale is out 4/17 via Audio Antihero/Tape Wormies. Pre-order it here.
