"BreakTheRules!" finds the Slump God bringing uncommon charisma to a standard rage-rap beat, rapping with clarity and husky abrasion — about how he don't give a fuck, he gon' break the rules — over ultra-fuzzy digital bass drone. I like hearing somebody attack this kind of production without doing a pitiful impression of Playboi Carti.
But the first thing we hear on "BreakTheRules!" is not our man Ski Mask. It's Billy Corgan, as sampled from the Smashing Pumpkins' old Batman & Robin soundtrack single "The End Is The Beginning Is The End." Big week for Billy Corgan! How does this fit into his theory that powerful forces phased rock out of the zeitgeist in favor of hip-hop? I wonder what he thought the first time he heard this.
