The louche, winky Australian singer-songwriter Alex Cameron spent a few years out of the spotlight after releasing his 2022 album Oxy Music, but he came back last year with a pretty fun single called "Short King." Today, he follows that single with a new one called "Statue Down."
Musically, "Statue Down" is just as playful as "Short King." It's a slighty, bouncy synthpop tune, and Cameron sings it in a knowing tone. But lyrically, this one is a lot more serious. On the chorus sings that "you gotta tear that statue down." At least as I hear it, it's a call to symbolically and literally dismantle the Epstein class that runs our world.
Cameron co-produced "Statue Down" with Maxim Ludwig and Mark Perkins, two of the musicians who play on the track. Saxman Roy Molloy, Cameron's longtime collaborator, is absent from the credits, just as he was on "Short King." For the "Statue Down" video, director Caro Yost edits together images from viral clips and from real-life conflicts, everything mushing together into a context-free blur. Check it out below.
