The bottom of this year's Coachella poster promotes "the bunker debut of Radiohead KID A MNESIA." That's not a stealth Radiohead concert; Ed O'Brien recently informed us the band will be doing 20 shows per year starting in 2027. Rather, it's an art installation involving the KID A MNESIA film.
The movie, directed by Sean Evans and featuring Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood's artwork from the Kid A and Amnesiac era, first premiered in 2021 as a download for PS5, PC, and Mac in conjunction with KID A MNESIA, Radiohead's multi-format reissue of their twin albums Kid A and Amnesiac. Per Yorke, the film contains a narrative "in which a Monster is trapped in a derelict museum of the lost & forgotten." It was designed as a physical exhibition to premiere in London and travel to other cities, but it was forced online by COVID-19. Here's the original trailer:
The exhibition will finally be presented in physical space at Coachella over the next two weekends. Here's how a new email from Radiohead's W.A.S.T.E. organization describes it:
Motion Picture House is a new film and art installation, purpose-built to house KID A MNESIA the movie, with the soundtrack rendered from Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac original multitracks in 6-point surround sound. Adjacent gallery spaces feature full scale artwork from Thom and Stanley Donwood, created during the writing and recording of the two albums.
This is going down in an actual 17,000-square-foot bunker with 38-foot ceilings, buried beneath the Empire Polo Fields. After Coachella, the exhibition will travel to Brooklyn, Chicago, Mexico City, and San Francisco over the course of this year and next. These are the dates and locations:
