Blues-rock stars Alabama Shakes made a surprise return at the end of 2024, playing an unannounced reunion set at a Tuscaloosa benefit — their first time playing live in seven years. They've been touring hard since then. Last year, they shared "Another Life," their first new song in ten years. Right now, they're at work on their third album, and they've got a ton of shows coming up. Today, they share their new sign-of-the-times single "American Dream."
Given the music that Brittany Howard made on her own, it's not exactly surprising that Alabama Shakes would drop a protest song today. It's still cool to hear what they do with the form. Over a slow, heavy psychedelic groove, Howard wails about the state of things through layers of echo: "I thought we wanted the same thing! I must be dreaming!" She works in references to abortion laws, environmental deregulation, gun violence, and the widening income gap — a swirling kaleidoscope of unrest that takes clear inspiration from things like Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. In a press release, Howard says:
It’s a snapshot of what we’re living through in 2026. I look around and wonder how we got to a place where there’s so much strain and so little support. I mean, it shouldn’t be impossible to take off work so you can bring your child to the doctor — that’s actually insane. My hope is that one day people will hear this song and say, "Yeah, shit was crazy back then, but we made it through."
We can hope, right? Below, check out "American Dream" and their tour dates.
