Boards Of Canada fans were in a tizzy last week after some people received mysterious VHS tapes in the mail from Warp, their longtime label. Those tapes featured some haunting, static-y audio, not necessarily a song, but it felt like pretty solid evidence that the IDM icons might be gearing up for a big return. Warp has also been teasing a release via street posters. Now we have even more confirmation: Today Boards Of Canada dropped "Tape 05," a three-minute recording of brand new music. It's Boards Of Canada's first new music in 13 years, following their 2013 album Tomorrow's Harvest. It's unclear if this is a full song or if it's just a snippet of a longer piece to come, but either way, it's a very pretty and peaceful wash of gentle, droning synths. Listen below.
