Kevin Morby is about to become a dad, and he's also about to release Little Wide Open, the new album that he recorded with super-producer and the National member Aaron Dessner. I have heard Little Wide Open, and it rocks. You might've heard some of it, too, since Morby has shared singles like "Die Young" and "Badlands," the latter of which features Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Sylvan Esso's Amelia Meath. Meath also sings on the LP's lead single "Javelin," and she joined Morby when he performed that song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night.
Sunflowers are a big theme in the Little Wide Open cover art, and they were a big theme in last night's Kimmel performance, too — flowers on the screen behind Morby, flowers all over the stage. "Javelin" is a very good song, and Morby had a team of indie luminaries backing him up, including one guy who just played bongos. Meath brought a real spark to her backing vocals, and I liked it when she sang the "hey!" ad-libs into an old phone receiver. It's a fun performance, and you can watch it below.
Little Wide Open is out 5/15 on Dead Oceans.
