Kelsey Lu – “Better Than That” (Feat. Sampha)

Kelsey Lu is gearing up to release her long-awaited sophomore album So Help Me God on June 12. She's already released some stunning singles including "Running To Pain" and "Portrait Of A Lady On Fire." Yesterday, she shared another track "Better Than That," which features Sampha.

Their voices compliment each other in such sublime way here. "Better Than That" starts as a sparse, piano-based track with orchestral strings stretching their limbs in the background. As the track saunters on, instrumentation refracts, settles, and expands. Lu's vocal swells are graceful and athletic.

In a press release, Lu shared that she recorded the song in London in 2021 while sharing a studio space "out of Damon Albarn's spot." She explained:

It all came pouring out one night unwritten and has always held a special place for me. I often end up playing detective on what I was speaking on, and around that time I was really unravelling my sense of purpose both in music and in life in general. This song represents a lot of swirling and at times frustrating internal thoughts, reflections, and contradictions on wanting to feel seen and unseen.
