Jacky Cadiou plays bass in the extremely sick French oi band Syndrome 81, and he's also the man behind the solo project Prisonnier Du Temps. (It's French of "Prisoner Of Time.") With Prisonnier Du Temps, Cadiou messes around with the same oi tradition that Syndrome 81 uses as a starting point, adding in a stark, gothic death-rock sensibility on his 2022 debut Comme Un Lion En Cage. Now, he's announced another album that'll push the project in different directions.
In a couple of weeks, Prisonnier Du Temps will release the sophomre album Prendre Le Pouvoir Par La Force. (Translation: Seize Power By Force.) The Bandcamp description mentions classic punk influences like Criminal Damage, Poison Idea, and Tragedy, and I can definitely hear that in the two advance songs. Tragedy especially shines through in the way these things are both epically scuzzed-out and catchy as fuck. But in the acoustic guitars and whoa-oh backing vocals, I hear something else — something that might even approach pop.
The new songs "La Liberté S'Obtient Par Le Sang" and "Dernier Regard" (repectively, "Freedom Is Won Through Blood" and "Last Look") are stomping oi singalongs that could also work as new wave songs. We need more new wave songs about taking power back by force. We want new wave and the truth! Check out both songs below.
TRACKLIST:
01 "Trahisons Et Mensonges"
02 "La Liberté S'Obtient Par Le Sang"
03 "L'Armée Des Ombres"
04 "Dans La Douleur Et Les Larmes"
05 "Dernier Regard"
06 "Et Jusqu'à La Mort"
07 "Le Genou à Terre"
08 "À Bout De Nerfs"
Prendre Le Pouvoir Par La Force is out 5/15 on La Vida Es Un Mus Discos. Also, can I just say that "À Bout De Nerfs" is a funny song title? It's French for "At The End Of My Rope," which is not funny, but it sounds like you're just really into Nerf guns.
