The Last Dinner Party – “Big Dog”

Rachell Smith

Fancy young British rockers the Last Dinner Party released their sophomore album From The Pyre last year, and they've been busy ever since. Earlier this year, they released their new song "Let's Do It Again!" on the benefit compilation HELP(2). Later this year, they'll open shows for Olivia Rodrigo, another artist who was on that HELP(2) comp. Next week, I'll see them play at Salt Lake City's Kilby Block Party fest. If you see me there, for god's sake, say hi. I don't know anybody in Utah. You're not interrupting me. Don't be weird and write something online about how you saw me in the crowd. Just say hi! Anyway. New Last Dinner Party song.

Anyway. New Last Dinner Party song. I got off track. Sorry. "Big Dog," the band's new single, is not actually a new song; it's just one that they haven't released until now. The song is a feverish riff-rocker that's been part of their live show since 2023, and now they're finally putting it out there. Good song! Fun! I like how this group can be brash and theatrical and melodic at the same time. They'll go for Kate Bush frippery one minute, and then they'll unleash a headbanger riff. I'm a little curious why they waited so long to release this one!

Elliott Arndt directed the "Big Dog" video, and it's heavy on live footage. Along with the song, the band has shared a studio recording of "Come All You Beasts," the poem that they recite before playing the song live. It's not a spoken-word track or anything, though. It's more of an intro to the song, with riffs and everything. Check out both below.

"Big Dog" is out now on Island.
