Oklou Scores Animated Surfing Movie In Waves

Marine Benjamin

An Oklou film score makes so much sense. Oklou's Choke Enough, one of last year's very best albums, cast a weirdly magical spell. When I play it in the car, I feel like I'm living in a montage. On top of that, Oklou is enough of a movie head that she's serving as a Critics' Week judge at this week's Cannes Film Festival. A few days ago, Oklou worked with Theodora and SebastiAn to cover the Beatles at the Cannes opening ceremony. She also scored a new film that just debuted at Cannes.

Oklou worked with the French artist ROB to score In Waves, a new animated film from the Vietnamese director Phuong Mai Nguyen. It's an adaptation of illustrator AJ Dungo's 2019 graphic novel, inspired by his real-life story — his partner who died of cancer and their shared love of surfing. The voice cast includes Stephanie Hsu and Will Sharpe. The movie premiered at Cannes last night, and Oklou was in attendance. Check out a clip below.
