Today, we get the first glimpse of Ariana Grande's forthcoming eighth album petal with the lead single "Hate That I Made You Love Me." It was co-written and produced by Ariana Grande, ILYA, and Max Martin. And, ya know what? It sounds like a hit!
"Hate That I Made You Love Me" has an uncanniness to it. It opens with some gangly, bubbly production that makes way for Grande to enter in her lower register. There's something eerie and uncomfortable simmering beneath the charming melody, one that recalls the 1985 hit "Cheri Cheri Lady" by Modern Talking. "Warm, kissed by the sun, then cold like the wind/ A bee stuck in honey," goes one line. It's tantalizing.
In an Instagram story, Grande shared that she's been working hard putting together the live show for petal. She also called the new single "one of my favorite songs i'll ever give to you." She wrote:

The official video for "Hate That I Made You Love Me," directed by Christian Breslauer, is coming on Monday, June 1, and it seems very likely that it will star scream king Justin Long. Listen to the song below.
