The amorphous Brooklyn band and art collective Standing On The Corner don't fit into any normal categories, and they don't do things that other bands do. Sometimes, they put out their own records. Sometimes, they do production for rappers like Earl Sweatshirt. And sometimes, they put out DVDs that you can only get by paying cash to a guy who's wandering around with a bag full of them in Times Square on 9/11, or at least that's how Noz recounts it.
Back in December, Standing On The Corner put out a CD-only single that featured three different versions of a song called "Gimme My Gun." Today, the follow last year's two-pack of "Baby" and "Friends 2day Enemies 2morrow" by releasing "Gimme My Fun" for real, though an established record company and everything. But it still doesn't exactly feel like a conventional release. Instead, it's a warped, psychedelic funk noodle about asking someone to give you your gun.
There's also a B-side: "Show Me The $," an echo-drenched synth-funk odyssey that liberally quotes both "Stayin' Alive" and Jerry Maguire. Check out both songs below.
"Gimme My Gun" b/w "Show Me The $" is out now on XL Recordings.
