Beastie Boys’ Mike D Announces Debut Solo Album Thank You: Hear “True Colors”

Mike D has been making moves. This spring, the Beastie Boy hopped onstage twice with his children's band, then announced some shows of his own, then released the solo singles "Switch Up" and "What We Got." There were also postcards and a website with the name Mike D 5D. You knew an album announcement was coming, and now it has.

The album is called Thank You. He's releasing it in August under the name Mike D 5D. It will be his debut solo album and his first album since the Beastie Boys' 2011 finale Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, though he's done guest spots with Cassius (alongside Cat Power) and Public Enemy (alongside Ad-Rock and Run-DMC) and produced an album for the band now known as Soft Play.

Along with the new album announcement, Mike has shared a third new song, "True Colors," which kind of reminds me of the Chemical Brothers' "Let Forever Be" if it was backed by more of a funk breakbeat. The psychedelic live-band energy is strong on this one, and the beauty of that gentle coda caught me by surprise. Listen below.
