Steve Lacy – “The Feeling”

Steve Lacy's new single "The Feeling" sounds like a stagnant wound. Like he was getting open heart surgery and they just left him on the operating table. The latest preview of his third album Oh Yeah?, which he announced last August via a Rolling Stone interview and the lead single "Nice Shoes," comes alongside the official release date for the follow-up to 2022's Gemini Rights, which yielded the surprise #1 hit "Bad Habit." Turns out Oh Yeah? is dropping July 17, the same day his Internet bandmate Syd will release her own new album Beard. Earlier this week, Lacy shared the album cover, which was shot by Gus Van Sant.

"The Feeling" is drenched in longing. "Why the fuck you gotta test my patience?/ 'Cause I could spend my whole life waiting," he sings about an unrequited love. Lacy is willing to spend eternity waiting, hoping to be crowned that one title of affection. "Am I ya baby?" he repeats on the chorus. It's an acoustic ballad and has some funk undertones. Overall, it's pretty instrumentally subdued but packed with, well, feeling. If you want more Lacy, he also contributed to Malcolm Todd's new album Do That Again, out today. He's featured on the closing title track.

"The Feeling" comes with a video directed by Matthew Castellanos, which you can check out below.
