Lava La Rue – “Prince Of Bologna”

Muna Farah

The latest artist to contribute to Speedy Wunderground’s singles series is London's Lava La Rue. For the new single "Prince Of Bologna," Lava La Rue was influenced by fragments of conversation overheard at the smoking area of a London venue. Taken out of context, these shards of convo become uniquely iridescent, beautiful and batshit crazy. The track was written and co-produced with Tomasso Medica (Husky Loops).

Some overheard lyrics are reflective ("I am all or nothing/ I am everything my exes say about me") while others are more peculiar or specific ("I have a funny rash shaped like Adele/ I’m rejecting my OBE"). Despite the lyrical whiplash, Lava delivers each line in the same hypnotic, poker-faced delivery. Instrumentally, post-punky guitars trudge on and the chorus is caked with cosmic, psychedelic effects.

Lava says the single "is lyrically a speed date of conversations I’ve overheard. Sort of like a love poem to getting fragments of other people's opinions in the smoking area of the George Tavern." They continued:

Tommaso, my dear friend from Bologna, had found a beat up 70s Italian organ with a built-in vintage drum machine that we pretty much jammed the whole initial idea on in 30 mins at 1am in his flat in Tulse Hill.

I showed the idea to Dan Carey, and he told me to get the band in his studio to flesh it out into a full Speedy Wunderground single - straight recorded live on to tape as a full band, lights off, yada yada.

Watch the video below. It also features a very good dub remix of the track from Dan Carey, named as "Prince Of Dublogna." You can pre-order the limited 7" here.
