We the indie rock listeners of planet Earth have collectively anointed Nate Amos as our new king. Box For Buddy, Box For Star quickly emerged as one of the greatest albums of the decade, and Holo Boy, a collection of re-recorded tunes from Amos' back catalog, proved he's been operating on this level for years. And then there's all the excellent music he's been making with Rachel Brown in Water From Your Eyes, and all the high-profile covers of This Is Lorelei songs from the various Box For Buddy deluxe editions. It's hard to think of too many more impressive 2020s underground rock glow-ups.
That rise is set to continue this fall with The Singer In My Band, This Is Lorelei's first album for Matador. Lead single "Billy Came Back" left us reeling, and the second single may be even better. It's called "Oh No Now My," and it's out today with a claymation-ish video by Julia Fernandez. This one centers on one of the simplest, most effective chord progessions in rock (the classic, emotionally charged 4-5-6-5) and is powered by a pounding, primitive drum part that makes the whole song feel climactic. It wouldn't work, though, without Amos singing another one of those gold-plated hooks. I'm very much looking forward to singing along with "Joey/ I don’t wanna let you miss so much" at my next Lorelei gig.
Amos says, "‘Oh No Now My’ is a song that ate itself - there were 3 versions of it before it landed here, where it has nothing in common with the original. I think it’s good but it’s hard to sing. I hope you like it.” Watch the video below.
