Carly Rae Jepsen's double album Day And Night is nearly a month away. We've already heard the singles "On Wires" and "After All." Those two tracks gave a glimpse into the album's day side and now we're being introduced to the night. Today she's returned with the ABBA-inspired single "Don't Leave Me On The Dancefloor," which is perfect if you've recently had the desperate need to rage-dance or sob while attempting solo choreography.
The accompanying music video speaks to both of these desires. Directed by Tony Award-winning playwright Jeremy O. Harris in his music video directorial debut, it stars Alden Ehrenreich as a man longing to weather a stormy relationship with his lover, played by actress Olivia Washington. Following a heart-wrenching phone call, he seeks solace on the dance floor.
Harris shared a statement about Jepsen and working with Alden and Olivia:
With every song on Day and Night Carly, our last modern bard, has turned complex stories into a jaunty pop smash while also mining the joys and pains of loving and being loved as adult now. I feel so lucky that Alden and Olivia were here to play a couple on the brink in the first of Carly’s night tracks, the song made me think of my relationship and so many others in this bleak moment in history who despite it all aren’t abandoning their partner on the dance floor but working it out together.
Jepsen also shared some insight about the song's sonic influence. “I’d just been recording in Sweden and then traveled to London to see ABBA Voyage," she said. "I came home with a mission of making my own ABBA-esque pop song – something with a perfect pop melody, but with some updated production. I wanted a hook that made you feel like you had to participate and sing along.”
