Jeff Tweedy – “Real Magic” (Star Moles Cover)

5:25 PM EDT on August 20, 2026

It's been quite the glow-up lately for the Historic New Jersey collective, and Jeff Tweedy has been right in the middle of it. The Philadelphia friend group boasts rising talents like Rubber Band Gun, Star Moles, and Sam and Louise Sullivan, the eclectic retro-rocking sibling who Wilco featured at their Solid Sound festival. Star Moles' Emily Moales was with the Sullivans at the fest, and Tweedy is now stumping for her too.

Moales released Highway To Hell, her latest Star Moles album, in March. We love it, and we interviewed her about its quirky, retro-tinted indie-pop fare this spring. Turns out Tweedy is also a fan. He often covers songs for his Starship Casual newsletter on Substack, but the recordings are usually behind a paywall. Today, he has published a take on the Highway To Hell track "Real Magic" that's available to the general public.

Some words from Tweedy on the tune:

I had to sing this song really low because I was in a hotel room and I couldn’t sing it high. Plus, it’s kind of hard—there’s a lot of really cool melodic twists and turns that she does. I don’t think I got all of them, but hopefully you get the idea. I think it’s a really great song and she writes really fun, funny, sweet, and touching lyrics
