Here's something you should know about the LA-based indie/country singer-songwriter known as GracieHorse: She is fully willing to dress up as the Hamburglar on her album cover. This isn't news, exactly. You should've figured that out before reading this far down in a blog post. You have eyes. I'm just pointing it out to say that she deserves your respect before you even hear a note of her music.
Gracie Jackson used to lead Boston fuzz-rockers Fat Creeps, a Stereogum Band To Watch back in 2012, and she guested on Tears On The Beach, the 2024 album from Survivor finalist and former Guerilla Toss member Ben Katzman. In 2023, she released L.A. Shit, her first album under the GracieHorse name. Early next year — motherfuckers are announcing January albums already — GracieHorse will release Breaking And Entering, a new album produced by fellow singer-songwriter Chris Cohen.
According to a press release, GracieHorse finished recording Breaking And Entering during the late stages of a difficult pregnancy, and she came close to scrapping it after accidentally deleting a few years' worth of demos, which sounds like a nightmare. GracieHorse and Chris Cohen both play guitar on the record, and it's got Angel Olsen collaborator Emily Elhaj on bass, White Fence's Dylan Hadley on drums, Tyler Cash on piano, and Tim Ramsey and Connor “Catfish” Gallagher on pedal steel. Opener "5 Card Stud" is an excellently smoky country-rocker that really shows what GracieHorse can do with her voice. In a press release, she says:
"5 Card Stud" is inspired by my friends who play poker. I think their lingo has a good lyrical quality that makes a good song. It’s basically about good luck and what people attribute their luck to. My friend got me a lucky hand root from a botanica for my birthday, and I kept it in my studio. I feel like it had a “hand” in helping me make some cool songs for this record.
