Les Claypool Records New Theme Song For South America (FKA South Park)

Do you ever think about how much money Primus must've made for recording their incredibly annoying 30-second South Park theme song all those decades ago? South Park debuted in 1997! I don't know how all the contracts and residuals must work, but I have to imagine that Les Claypool pretty much turned himself into Scrooge McDuck there. If you were to tell me that Claypool was the second-richest bass wizard on the planet, after Paul McCartney, I would believe you. Right now, South Park is back for its 29th season, but now it's called South America. It has a new Les Claypool theme song, too.

Last week, after they won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced made a big announcement while sticking it to their new employers: "Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation."

At the risk of explaining a joke that you already figured out, it's an obvious but not-unfunny bit about Donald Trump's absurd fixation on slapping the word "America" on things like the Gulf Of Mexico and Lake Ontario and expecting the media to go along with it. Trump was a big target for the show in its last season. I didn't see last night's premiere, but Deadine reports that it was mostly about the town's adults getting mad at their kids' fixation on Chinese e-bikes. They also went all-in on the name-change bit, complete with a new version of the theme song, with Les Claypool awkwardly shoving the word "America" in all the places where "Park" once went.

The movie that Parker and Stone are making with Kendrick Lamar is apparently still on the way.
