The Exeter rock trio Pushbike specialize in guitar-powered indie/alternative nostalgia bombs. Their Little Bastard EP will be out in a few short weeks, and they're teasing it today with the intriguingly titled "Pure Hate." The song races out of the gate with pure Dinosaur Jr. energy, but within two minutes it morphs into a gritty '90s emo track. I love it.
There's another new Pushbike song out, and it's also worth hearing. The "Pure Hate" B-side "Captain On The Bridge" is more of a Guided By Voices power-pop exercise, from its hypnotic post-Beatles melody to its 80-second runtime. If the goal was to leave us wanting more, they've achieved it, and not in the sense that what they've given us so far is lacking.
Pushbike reportedly take their cues from legendary late 20th century UK institutions like Sarah Records, Cherry Red, and C86, but to me this stuff is pure indie Americana. Hear both of the new songs below.
