Things looked bleak for a while there. Last year, while enduring a career lull and publicly struggling with his mental health, Lil Nas X was arrested on the streets of Los Angeles and faced four felony counts, including the risk of jail time. But the charges were dropped pending mental health treatment, which seems to be going well.
In a positive video update back in June, Montero shared that he'd been diagnosed with bipolar disorder but was making great progress. Although half-joking that he's living life on "extreme hard mode" as a Black, gay, bipolar man, he also told us, "I'm doing much better. I'm doing better. I'm feeling better. I'm creating freely, and there's less fear in my heart. I'm just smelling the roses." At the time, he said he was excited to get back to music soon, but the time hadn't come yet. Now it has.
LNX is back today with a music video for new single "World's Greatest!" Written entirely by Lil Nas X and produced by C.WRAY and Steve Rusch, it's an upbeat pan-genre pop song that I can imagine soundtracking a lot of inspirational montages. "Walk by faith, not by sight’ was my mom’s favorite phrase to say," Nas shares in a statement. "As I move through life it resonates more & more."
The "World's Greatest!" video, directed by Phillip Youmans in Atlanta, reunites the current Lil Nas X with a younger version of himself. Watch below.
