What happens when you take a chillwave musician out of his bedroom and place him in an unfamiliar recording studio? Depends. When we first posted Toro y Moi's "Blessa" last summer I called it "some kind of Animal Collective-via-bedroom J Dilla" and in the "Talamak" post noted "[Chaz Bundick] has a knack for making bedroom recordings sound much bigger." That, and his remixes go beyond simply added an extra drum track. So maybe the guy knows his way around a professional mixer/soundboard? See for yourself in this tidy yourstruly video that finds him re-recording Causers Of This's "You Hid" one instrument at a time.
The setup:
In less than 3 hours, Toro y Moi recorded piano, drums, bass, guitar, rhodes, and vocals (in that order) for this live re-make of “You Hid,” tracking each instrument once and rarely asking to hear what was just recorded.
