Craft Spells – “From The Morning Heat”

Craft Spells – Idle Labor

|Craft Spells - Idle Labor

When I included Craft Spells in 18 Darks Bands To Watch In 2011, I mentioned the Seattle-via-California Captured Tracks signees were more summery and New Romantic than the rest of the artists on this list, but that crooner Justin Paul Vallesteros’ shadowy voice -- sometimes an Ian Curtis-esque whisper, other times a confident croon -- nails a kind of ’80s nostalgia that connotes darkness, even when bringing light into the room. See, for instance, "From The Morning Heat," a song with warmth in the title, something cooler in its execution.
