Last month, I gave Album Of The Week to Shearwater's Fellow Travelers, on which the Texan band played sweeping, filigreed covers of songs from bands they know, or bands they'd shared stages with. They've also dropped another cover of late, of Frank Ocean's career-making "Novacane," but apparently they don't actually know Ocean, since it didn't make the album. Instead, this was part of a Record Store Day Black Friday release, a split with Low's cover of Rihanna's "Stay." Shearwater's take on "Novacane" is a warm, fluttery, almost proggy piece of work with almost no R&B in it, and it's a kick to hear Jonathan Meiburg singing Ocean's conversational relationship-talk lyrics in that choirboy tenor.
