Daniel Wilson – “Wedding Daze” (Stereogum Premiere)

Michigan-based singer/songwriter/producer Daniel Wilson has one of the most unique, soulful voices I've heard in a while. His family dubbed him "little Luther" after Luther Vandross, and his voice is similarly smooth, but it also hits a unique higher register reminiscent of Cee-Lo Green without quite extending into falsetto.

Wilson is releasing his Sinner Of The Week EP later this year, and the first foray is "Wedding Daze." It's a dazzling mix of gospel tendencies and a bedroom electro pop aesthetic that's elevated into the stratosphere by the 24-year-old's powerful voice. Herky-jerky synths, a classic syncopated drumline, and heavenly, harmonized hums are propelled by Wilson's voice before dialing back for the hook. He sings, "I'm glad it's funny/ Your smiles, I'm sunny/ It's a wedding daze," putting a playful turn on "wedding" and an elongated a in "daze." It's a feel-good, jubilant song that is sure to lift your spirits. Check it out.

Sinner Of The Week is out later this year on Wilson's own Zap Records.
