Over the past few years, we've seen increasingly blurred boundaries between Caribou, Dan Snaith's main project, and Daphni, his dance music alter-ego. Last year, Caribou released the dance-focused album Honey. This past weekend, he played the opening festivities for the Primavera Sound Festival, and my co-workers who didn't miss their flights said that he was in full dance mode. Now, Snaith is back with a new single under the Daphni name. See if you can tell the difference.
Last month, Dan Snaith, working under the Daphni name, assisted on the Sofia Kourtesis single "Unidos." Now, he's back with the descriptively titled "Sad Piano House," which honestly doesn't sound that sad to me. The track is intended to work as a continuation of "Cloudy," from the 2022 Daphni album Cherry, as well as Kelbin's "Cloudy" remix. Here's what Snaith says about the single:
I DJ'ed a lot last year in the lead up to the Caribou album and inevitably ended up making a bunch of new music to play out in those sets. I'd made this one but knew that I wasn't sure about it or when it would ever get a release, so I sent it over to Ben UFO and he started playing it and people started asking me about it. Now I've finally got a chance to finish it off and release it. I'd given it the temporary title "Sad Piano House" when I sent it because it's piano house... but, you know, not that kind of piano house... I didn't really intend for that to be the final track title, but once it appeared in a couple of tracklists for radio shows and people started asking about it, the title stuck.
