On New Year's Day, the Madison garage-punk band Wristwatch unleashed their album III on the world. Wristwatch frontman Bobby Hussy has another band called Whippets — which is more of a poppy '90s alt-rock exercise cut with grooving, post-punky Y2K-era indie — and now they're rolling out a new album too.
No Skulls is dropping just a few weeks from now. Whippets previously shared its lead single "Nothing New," which boasts a needly lead guitar melody, a contagious bass-powered rhythm, and a chorus that seasons the band's grunge-era sensibility with some cartoonish new wave flavor. Today they follow it up with the winsome opening track "These Woods," further spotlighting those bass grooves in a way that reminds me of Les Savy Fav and the Dismemberment Plan.
