There's a new Machine Gun Kelly album on the way. It's called lost americana, he said on social media today, and it'll be out in August. It's the first album he's releasing since one of his idols Bob Dylan inexplicably posted an old video of Machine Gun Kelly rapping in a record store, and it'll also be the first Machine Gun Kelly album since he probably met Dylan last month at Outlaw Fest. MGK announced the record with a trailer clip -- perhaps he, too, is getting in on the visual album schtick -- and Dylan himself is the narrator.
There's not a new single today, but MGK did hint that a new album was afoot last month when he shared the single "Cliché," which paraphrases Dylan: "Baby, I'm a rolling stone." Neither Dylan nor MGK has publicly confirmed the collaboration, but Variety says it’s real. Here's what Dylan says:
lost americana is a personal excavation of the American Dream. A journey to find what's been lost. This album is a love letter to those who seek to rediscover it. The dreamers, the drifters, the defiers. It's a sonic map of forgotten places, a tribute to the spirit of the invention, and a quest to reclaim the essence of American freedom. From the gold neon diamonds to the rumble of the motorcycles, this is music that celebrates the beauty found in the in-between spaces where the past is reimagined and the future is forged on your own terms.
I have no idea what "gold neon diamonds" are, but whatever. Stereogum has reached out to MGK's representatives for comment. MGK also posted a photo of Dylan on his Instagram Stories, in case the identity of his narrator wasn’t clear. Speaking of Instagram, we'll be taking credit for willing this collab into existence.
