In 2003, country-folk legend Gillian Welch opened her spare, powerful album Soul Journey with "Look At Miss Ohio." It's a stark hymn about a girl who wants to do right but not right now, and it's probably Welch's best-loved song, even if you factor in what she did on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Earlier this year, Welch and her longtime partner David Rawlings played that song on Colbert. Today, we get to hear what King Hannah does with "Look At Miss Ohio."
Liverpool duo King Hannah were a Stereogum Band To Watch in 2021, and they recently released the stirring folk-rock song "This Hotel Room." That song is the A-side of King Hannah's new single, and the B-side, out today, is their take on "Look At Miss Ohio." The group don't take a whole lot of liberties with that song, but they don't need to. They play it straight, and they bring plenty of smoky authority. Below, listen to the King Hannah version of "Look At Miss Ohio" and the Gillian Welch original.
"This Hotel Room" b/w "Look At Miss Ohio" is out now on City Slang.
