Tōth’s Kafkaesque “Easy” Video Features A Bug Costume And Mei Semones

Tōth, the solo moniker of Rubblebucket's Alex Toth, has a new album called And The Voice Said coming soon. Caroline Rose, who co-produced the album, guests on two tracks, and one has Kimbra. The latest single, "Easy," is noteworthy for a few reasons, not least of all a music video that finds Tōth morphing into a bug, Kafka-style, and features Artist To Watch Mei Semones in their backing band.

But what stands out most about "Easy" is Tōth's mastery of the old loud-quiet-loud trick. In the verses, they linger in the low register of their range, almost whispering the lyrics, "I’m feeling like myself again/ I maybe like myself again/ And I'm trying to be easy/ Don’t you want me to be easy?" Then, when the chorus hits, that voice achieves liftoff as Tōth launches into a howled high note worthy of Diary-era Jeremy Enigk.

A word from the artist:

This song is an homage to overcoming self hatred. It’s maybe the simplest and most punk Tōth song I’ve ever released and it almost didn’t make the record. But Caroline [Rose] was like "are you kidding me this HAS to be on the album!" When I was recording this in my apartment and screaming, "I’m easy" at the top of my lungs, my neighbor knocked on the door to make sure I was ok.
