RIP Jeff Buckley, you would've hated TikTok, but at least you got a hit out of it. "Lover, You Should’ve Come Over," from the late singer-songwriter's only studio album Grace (1994), entered the Billboard Hot 100 this week at #97 after getting a major boost from TikTok. Not bad for a 32-year-old non-single! It's Buckley's first appearance on the Hot 100, coming nearly three decades after he tragically died of accidental drowning at age 30.
During his lifetime, Buckley was best known for his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (which also appeared on Grace), but that song surprisingly never made it onto the Hot 100. Like a lot of old songs that go viral on TikTok, it's hard to pinpoint exactly when "Lover, You Should've Come Over" started picking up steam, but last year's HBO documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (which takes its title from the "Lover, You Should've Come Over" lyrics) might've helped a little bit.
Grace is also doing well on the charts these days: It now sits at #156 on the Billboard 200. It originally peaked at #149 in June 1995, before peaking again at #82 in December as "Lover, You Should've Come Over" began to resurge. Revisit the song, and a few TikTok edits, below.
