Last month, famous rock climber Alex Honnold scaled the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan without any ropes or equipment. It was the highest free solo climb of an urban structure in history (1,667 ft) and it was livestreamed on Netflix. It was noted that he was listening to a lot of Tool during the ascent, and now he's shared the playlist he was streaming.
The playlist is very Tool-heavy, featuring several tracks from 1996's Ænima, 2001's Lateralus, and 2019's Fear Inoculum. In addition, there's Senses Fail, Chevelle, the Used, Linkin Park, and a good chunk of Nothing More.
On ABC Audio, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan reacted to Honnold listening to Tool during the climb: "Not everybody and their mother texted me every three seconds telling me about it or anything," he quipped.
As for the actual climb, Keenan commented, "What the heck were you thinking, dude? It's impressive! It's extremely impressive, but, I mean, I wouldn't make it past the first floor. I would fall to my death." Would he play a role in the climber's next endeavor? "I'll be the guy down below eating french fries making fun of him," he said.
Honnold also went on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday to discuss the experience. Check it out below.
