Gladie – “Brace Yourself”

Roxana Azar

The chance to experience new Gladie music is always welcome, and today we welcome some more. Augusta Koch's tunefully scrappy Philly indie/punk band tapped Jeff Rosenstock to produce new album No Need To Be Lonely, and so far they've shared two singles, "Car Alarm" and "Future Spring." Now comes "Brace Yourself," a song with a contagious momentum and a gritty vocal performance from Koch.

I enjoy the first verse so much that I wanted to highlight the whole thing: "How dare the morning look so peaceful/ When it knows your fragile fate/ Expected the sun to rise backwards/ Hurricanes for days and days/ Should have listened more and talked less/ Every dumb cliche is true/ Wish we could ignore this/ Sit on your couch and talk shit like we used to." The chorus is nice too: "I won't hold back a compliment/ I'll be careful with how my time is spent."

A word from Koch:

"Brace Yourself" is a song about worrying about the health of a friend I love. Moments like that tend to shake you and can sometimes completely reorient you to what is actually important. It's so easy to get trapped in the monotony of day to day life and focus on things that don’t actually matter, "Brace Yourself" is about trying to pay more attention to the things that do.
