Chris Gantry Announces New Album Worth Every Nail: Hear “Boldness Of Spirit”

12:22 PM EDT on July 27, 2026

In his later years, Nashville-based outlaw country legend Chris Gantry has experienced a resurgence with assistance from the community surrounding Chicago indie fixture Drag City Records. In 2017, Drag City reissued Gantry's lost album At The House Of Cash. In 2019, we shared "Box Of Crayons," his Bill Callahan collab from the Jerry David DeCicca-produced Nashlantis. He's since released The Outlaw Bible on Steadyboy Records, and this year he'll return with Worth Every Nail on Appalachia Record Co.

Produced by Appalachia's own Loney John Hutchins, Worth Every Nail finds Gantry backed by a bunch of rootsy Nashville indie luminaries including most of Silver Jews, Raconteurs/Dead Weather/Greenhornes bassist Jack Lawrence, ambient steel guitarist Luke Schneider, and guitarist Sean Thompson, who plays with Margo Price and fronts Sean Thompson's Weird Ears. Guest vocalists include Erin Rae, Caitlin Rose, and Cassie Berman.

That's quite a lineup, and on album opener "Boldness Of Spirit," the band is cooking. But Gantry himself remains the main draw. "Boldness Of Spirit" presents him as a wise elder whose voice has only gotten more compelling with the years. Listen below.
