Snail Mail – “My Maker”

Daria Kobayashi Ritch

Would you ever ride in a hot air balloon? I would not. That shit looks terrifying. I don't even like standing on rooftops or on the edges of cliffs, and you still have some form of ground under you when you do that. You don't just have a basket. A basket is crazy. Where I live, hot air balloons are a big deal. You see them floating above Charlottesville most chilly mornings, and they are beautiful, but I would never seriously entertain the idea of climbing on one of those things and potentially being sent to hell on a strong gust of wind. Lindsey Jordan, better known as Snail Mail, seemingly does not have those issues, since she spends her entire new video aloft in a balloon.

Snail Mail's new album Ricochet, her first in more than five years, drops next month. Lindsey Jordan recorded the LP with Momma's Aron Kobayashi Ritch, and it reflects big-time live changes like a move from New York to North Carolina. Jordan already shared lead single "Dead End." Today, she shares "My Maker," a sparkly, strummy '90s-style alt-pop gem. Jordan co-directed the video with Elsie Richter, and it's mostly one unbroken shot of Jordan singing the song while floating in a balloon over what appears to be a Southwestern landscape. It's stunning, and she looks so happy. Couldn't be me. Here's what Jordan says about the song:

"My Maker" was the lyrical jumping off point of the record, the anchor that helped me build the rest of the album around it. I kept thinking about the line “it’s just sky,” which obviously meant we had to make a video in a hot air balloon. It took six canceled rides for that to happen, but we finally got up there. I wanted the video to reference the lyrics about mortality, but also about the freedom that comes with realizing fate is out of your hands.

I'm going to keep my mortality in my hands as long as I possibly can, thank you very much. Along with that single and video, Snail Mail have unveiled plans for a big headlining tour of North America. Jordan and her band will be on tour through much of the spring, and Sharp Pins will open the whole tour. Along the way, Avalon Emerson & The Charm, @, Swirlies, Armlock, and Rocket will also join the bill. Below, check out the "My Maker" video and the tour dates.
